For a little while after coming home to Russia Yuri was able to celebrate having won gold. He let himself get lost in the excitement, spending quite a bit of time with his grandfather and the few friends he had from the rink before the excitement died down. Then it was time to get back to work.

And back to work meant time to think.

Think about things Otabek said in text messages. Think about things that happened in hotel rooms that shouldn't have happened but Yuri was stubborn. Because when JJ put out a challenge he couldn't seem to bring himself to back down because it was JJ.

Was that something you were supposed to tell other people about if you were going to date them? Otabek had been so ... polite. And Yuri had turned him down because he didn't know. He didn't know if he was supposed to say anything or if it was what he wanted at all or even if he was good enough to be doing that.

Dating. After a hotel room blow job out of spite. Y e a h . . .

He was in his home rink, stretching before taking to the ice. He wasn't sure if and when Otabek would be arriving, like he'd implied he would. It'd be nice to have an actual friend around... He stretches his arms above his head, tiling his head back a moment before laying forward. Splits were easy at least. He could focus on the dull pull of muscles he'd neglected a little instead of how stupid he was.

Yuri could tell that Otabek doesn't want to linger on it. He needed to put it aside for now and enjoy the outing with his friend.

He was glad to order something sweet and hot chocolate, refocusing the conversation around to his cats. It was a light enough topic and he asked quite a bit about Otabek's bike.

Anything for this conversation to feel normal.

Otabek listened to anything Yuri had to say. He really liked hearing about the cats. He didn't have pets at home himself, since he wasn't there, and he didn't want to depend on anyone else to care for a pet.

Maybe once he settled back down, he'd be able to. He loved to talk about his bike. His bike was his pride and joy.

The drinks and sweets came, and were sat down in front of them, before the barista scooted away again.

"People are often too afraid to ride with me," Otabek said.

"I don't see why.. It's just a bike. You don't drive like a crazy person or anything." Yuri didn't exactly sit quite properly on the bike anyway. If he was going to be in an accident he'd much rather die than be paralyzed.

Probably a horrible thing to think about, to be honest.

"Maybe its less the bike and more you. You're really stoic." Otabek kept his temper was really more like. It was a nice change.

"I don't want anyone to get hurt," Otabek noted. He considered himself a responsible driver, and that's what he constantly tried to be. He didn't want anyone to get hurt while in his care, on the back of his bike.

"Me?" he asked. He never really considered that he was off-putting himself. He could see why, though. Sometimes people didn't like when they couldn't read someone. He sipped at his coffee. "I never thought about that."

Yuri snorted and shake his head. He furrows his brow and puts in a stern grouchy expression, glowering at Otabek across the table.

"This is your resting face. People aren't scared of the bike, they're scared of you!"

The younger skater is laughing now, shaking his head.

"They just don't want to put in the effort to know you, that's all. You're just serious faced."

Otabek smiled a little. He didn't do it often, and found that his time with Yuri often caused it. "Always have been," Otabek answered and nodded. "It's okay, then. I'm happy as long as you are my friend." He leaned hi chin into the palm of his hand, still smiling as he got a cookie for himself and took a bite.

"Then I guess I should thank you for giving me that chance."

Yuri liked that smile. He knew it was something that was kept off Otabek's face for the most part but here he was, getting Otabek to smile. By.. he wasn't sure how he was doing it actually.

He's a bit redfaced as he looks down into his drink, fiddling with the cup.

"You.. sort of rescue.. kidnapped.. or whatever right off the street, you never really gave me a chance to not give you a chance..."

"You look like you needed help," he said simply. He wasn't always kind or helpful, but then seemed like an appropriate time to help. Plus, he would get to meet someone who he had watched for some time.

"I'm glad you came along, though."

"I couldn't very well stay! I would have been torn to pieces or made to wear something... stupid and cute or whatever for pictures with those insane females."

Why did the girls that tried to get involved in his life have to be insane? He'd probably have more interest in them if they didn't chase him down the street screaming bloody murder.

"Be glad you don't have crazy fans..."

Otabek's expression flattened, to make his point. He lifted one hand to point to his face. "There's a reason I don't," Otabek answered, "and you know why." He looked scary sometimes. He was calm, and not particularly interesting to people outside of his life.

"It's different at home, but not like what you have to go through. It would help if I had -- " Er, how should he put it. "A nice face like yours."

Yuri gave Otabek a dead pan expression. What did Otabek mean by a nice face like his? Otabek's face was fine, besides being serious. This had nothing to do with faces.

"If this really had anything to do with nice faces then I wouldn't have anyone. I just shout, swear and glare wherever I go to make them leave me alone but here we are.. they just like me more."

He waves his hand slightly. "Its CHARISMA I think. You have it on the ice but then you're really subdued off it. "

Despite his anger and cursing, and glaring - Yuri did have a pretty face - with the eyes of a soldier. He was determined, and yes, charismatic.

Otabek didn't have that at all.

"I am," he said. He nodded several times, and agreed completely. There was no arguing.

"I think it's okay. I don't enjoy being swarmed by people."

"Neither do I! I should learn something from you. I'm swarmed all the time."

Yuri sighs and slouches before sitting up again to snatch a cookie off Otabek's side of the table. He wasn't going to let Otabek have all the sweet things.

"If you hang around me you're going to get swarmed, I promise."

"It's alright," Otabek said. Maybe his presence would scare some of them away. He'd just have to be sure he was especially stone-faced when anyone approached. That was easy for him, though.

He piked up a cookie and dipped it into his coffee, then took a bite. "Maybe I won't. We don't know."

Yuri watches what Otabek is doing with the cookie before leaning across and dipping his own cookie into the coffee as well. Never mind that it was Otabek's. He would try anything at least once and if it was on the table then it was also Yuri's.

"This is good! It takes the bitterness off a lot." He looked pleased as he munches the cookie down.

"I wouldn't want you to get swarmed. Its bad enough they do it at all." he doesn't hate his fans. Not really. He appreciated them. But he had an image to uphold!

"You'll start getting fans yourself anyway."

"I have some at home," Otabek answered. But they didn't have the enthusiasm that Yuri's fans did. It suited him nicely. "I don't much like being swarmed by people." And most of them knew that. He was a little uncomfortable with it, and unsure how to deal.

While a very stoic person, Otabek was very direct but - the directness they had was a little much for him to handle. He was honestly okay without having any.

He eats another cookie. "It is good."

If only Yuri's fans knew that he didn't like getting swarmed by people. But to be fair, he wouldn't have met Otabek if they weren't all following him around obsessively. He supposed they couldn't be all that bad then.

Yuri dips his cookie into the hot cocoa he'd picked and takes a bite. He looks delighted at this idea even more, redipping the last piece and offering it out to Otabek.

"Try it with the cocoa!! It's really good!"

Otabek accepted the cookie, and bit into it. It was sweet. He liked it. He smiled again, looking quite pleased. He was having fun here. He took a lot of things seriously, but he felt relaxed here.

"It's delicious." He lifted up a hand and waved down the barista, ordering more cookies, so that they could enjoy sitting there and eating more and more.

"It is nice to take a break," he said finally, after the new supply of cookies arrived. He knew he probably shouldn't have this much sweet food (as an athlete), but he wanted it at the moment.

Yuri didn't care if he ate a lot of sweets. He still had a young metabolism and the amount of work he put himself through to keep his body together was high. He was going to be just fine and was absolutely delighted at the arrival of more discs of sweet glory.

"It is! I've been putting together ideas for next year though, I really want to blow everyone out of the water. Pigtsuki can't have that record for too long or else i'll look like an idiot for not breaking it."

Grumble grouch. He was still mad he'd messed up. He could have had both records!

"I think you'll be able to beat it," Otabek said simply, taking another cookie and dipping it into his coffee. Of course, he was probably biased, but he genuinely appreciated Yuri's natural grace on the ice, combined with the skill he had definitely worked hard to have.

Otabek appreciated the hard work. He had always worked hard for everything he wanted to get good at.

He genuinely believed Yuri could, though.

Their hands bumped when Yuri leaned to dip his cookie and maybe his cheeks went a little red but he'd never admit to it. He sits back with a small smile, then motions to Otabek.

"What about you? What are your plans? I really liked your program for this past one, it was really strong! You have a lot of strength on the ice, even if you're a little stiff."

Probably shouldn't criticize while trying to compliment..

He turns his head away for a moment, considering Yuri's question. He knew he was a little stiff. His entire personality on and on the ice was a bit severe. He'd have to spend the next few months before the Grand Prix going over it, trying to figure himself out.

"I'm still figuring out music. Probably something stronger again. Maybe less like a soldier, though." Because he'd need to add something that made him truly stand out. He got better by the year. He didn't place his one, and he was going to have to work harder for next year.

After all, Victor was back in the game.

"I liked your music..." Yuri said a little softly, propping his chin. "I can let you listen to my mp3 player, I have a lot of different styles. Maybe it can help you find something? I don't know.. Either way, I'll help you."

He didn't mind helping Otabek. Honestly, he didn't really overly mind helping any skater. He'd taught Katsuki how to land his jump, he'd teach Otabek how to have better grace.

Yuri wanted to share the podium with his friend. It would feel nice, to stand there with Otabek at his side. Slightly shorter. Because silver.

Look, he wasn't going to give up the gold, okay.

"I liked it, too," Otabek said, "but there can be no improvement without change." He appreciated the offer. He nodded, "Thank you." This was a sign of the friendship that he had offered when they first met. He wouldn't turn down any help when it was offered to him. He'd have to be foolish to turn it down.

After all, Otabek was working to improve. He was going to try -hard - to place. It would mean he'd have to work to beat Yuri. But honestly, he wouldn't want it any other way. He appreciated Yuri as a competitor.

"I mean it."

Yuri felt like Otabek had a lot of time alone. Sure, the other young man probably had his coach, his family, all of that.. But he'd asked so earnestly for a friend.. and Yuri felt like Otabek must be lonely. Yuri realized he was rather lonely as well.

They both had thorny personalities. It was nice to find someone willing to dodge the thorns.

"Yeah, well... You're going to do great next time! So don't even worry about that."
